two sentences. the thesis hopes to substantiate perception through the lens of duality, duplicity, or multiplicity. it pursues innerspatial operations of sensorial interplay within a subtle siting of alterity at the scale of the body.

otherness, nowhere, s l o w  d o w n. understanding through space as the movement of searching the encyclopedia and finding elsewhere

through three paradigmatic people - through three 'operations':

one.

— varda - 'territories of overlap' . her 1956 film incorporates two major threads of narrative, and two sites. one location figures as a reference and is present as an 'other' . her film is a precedent for material considerations.

— encyclopedic operation: subtle tactile shift made with wax rubbed along the margins; resituated, incomplete text from one page to another.

two.

— smithson - 'lost countries' . his non-sites presence transition, removal/loss in entropy, always referencing an(other (state but in such a way as to place unnoticed place.

— encyclopedic operation: covering so as to erase, mar, or invalidate entries for countries that are no longer in existence since 1975 due to military, governmental, civil, and or cultural reasons.

three.

— wigley - 'spaceing' . literally defining writing as the creation of space, wigley's investigations of derrida's philosophies opens and challenges traditional notions of space and atmosphere.

— encyclopedic operation: plays with the notion of space as text, as well as highlights the bordering of space with gloss paint in the margins. subtle introduction of derrida's name where it would lie in the encyclopedia.
